Story of the Day
I had the frames replaced for a pair of glasses that were damaged in my flight to Boise
several weeks ago. I even went so far as to go back to the place where I bought them
originally. That turns out not to have mattered. The woman who was working there took
my loose lens and tried to find a frame that it fit into. She checked those that
looked almost like the ones that I had broken but found them to be subtly different.
Although the shape of the lens was at a first approximation the same as the lens hole,
there was always just a slight difference in shape such that the lens would pop out of
the frame. I had thought that there were standard shapes for eyeglass lenses. Well,
there seem to be almost standard shapes. I guess this requires that all lenses be hand
fitted to the frames they are to go into. I guess this final labor is of lower value
then the labor to reduce tolerances on the shapes of the frames.
Today was a grand and proud day for my Power Macintosh. Its top was opened for the first time
since it came to stay with me. I made my first efforts at alteration of its physical
configuration. I had acquired two 8 Meg SIMMS for somewhat more than a song and had
the confidence to try and install them myself. After I blew the dust from the
motherboard and found the memory sockets I quickly discovered that this was indeed a
task I could perform. It took me less than ten minutes to install 16 Meg of memory and
close the system back up. The restart was uneventful except for the 24 Meg of RAM now
available. The new memory has speeded up most applications and I am pleased with and
proud of the results.
